Shinjuku Station has the largest number of passengers in the world, with an average of 3.53 million passengers a day. It is certified in the Guinness Book of Records.
The charm of Tokyo city is co-existing two different aspects, like old and new, solemn and entertaining. Shinjuku has the good example of it.
First, both solemn and entertaining part.
◎Kabukicho district
Have you heard of Shinjuku Kabukicho and Golden-gai?
Kabukicho is the name of great entertainment district especially night life. You can meet a Godzilla head here.
Golden-Gai is a collection of dense tiny old bars lining alleyways, more than 200! This district remains the air of 1960’s.
Recently this place became very popular place for foreign visitors. I can understand, because the air is very unique. Just strolling here even daytime is fun.
This is also a nice pathway called four seasons pathway, just next to Golden-gai.
Hanazono Shrine can be seen at the end of Golden Gai. Red building
And interesting enough, there is a solemn Shinto shrine that is quiet and serene, next to the Golden-gai that is kind of dark and tending to lose orderly manner.
You will be surprised by the totally different air between them.
Hanazono Shrine has long history, more than 400 years.
It has closely related with show business.
Hanazono shrine, it was built more than 400 years ago. Many festivals are held every year.
I'd like to show you another charm of Shinjuku in the next column.
